Gregor Reischle, head of Additive Manufacturing at TÜV SÜD, gave us an interview about the decision to become a member at ACAM Aachen Center for Additive Manufacturing.

What motivated you to become a member of the ACAM Aachen Center for Additive Manufacturing?

As an internationally operating business unit with the focus on AM, we have set up a team of 20 AM experts bringing many years of experience on AM processes into our company. We decided to join ACAM to access a strong network of experienced AM users. We expect to win new partners for our R&D activities, and together we enable the industrial application of AM technologies.

What specific contribution do you make in the field of Additive Manufacturing?

We develop and run testing, certification, inspection, and training services for the adoption of AM technologies within an industrial context. TÜV SÜD “industrial AM readiness” approach brings trust and readiness within the AM Ecosystem to the following segments: Hard & Software, Materials, Processes & Workflows, Manufacturing Sites, and Personal Enablement services. Therefore, we fetch our own AM knowledge and the TÜV SÜD resources on standard services (e.g., machine safety, product testing, material validation). We are actively working and leading working groups in several AM specific ISO/ASTM standardization projects.

Which AM technologies have you been pursuing lately?

Our team of experts is currently working with PBF-LB, PBF-EB, DED, MEX, and VPP processes. As next, we will focus on BJT/MJT technologies. Our priority aims for industrialization and ensuring safety (e.g., machinery safety acc. to machine directive).

In what way is the partnership at ACAM beneficial for your company? What do you want to achieve with it?

ACAM enables us to connect with potential users of our services as well as to participate in the joint R&D projects that suit perfectly with our certification schemes. Here we see a big chance to approve and innovate our products. This year we are happy to be a part of the project “Trust in AM machines”, which will focus on the investigation of process and machine relevant CTQs for DED and L-PBF processes to frame explicit checklists and quality criteria and enable further industrialization of these processes. Our AM hardware expert Björn Hansen will be in charge of this project from our side.

How will the cooperation between your company and ACAM look like in the future?

We are looking forward to realizing successful pilot projects within the ACAM community. TÜV SÜD’s AM vision to enable industrial use of Additive Manufacturing technologies is accelerated together with the ACAM power.
