Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a key industrial technology, expected to grow rapidly through the next few years. A special focus is on Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) – a process that allows producing three-dimensional work pieces from a variety of metals. Consequently, LUNOVU now introduces its eLMD machine system, designed for the use in research institutes, industrial development centers, pilot production environments and any institutions considering to start with LMD.

In the LMD process, a laser beam melts a metal powder jet, creating a small metal melt pool. When moving this melt pool across the surface of a work piece, it will continuously deposit material at any desired place. LMD has been used as a production technology in specific application areas for quite some time, e.g. for the repair of parts or for the deposition of wear resistant coatings. However, LMD is also well suited to build up 3D parts from scratch (Additive Manufacturing), which is an application that has gained a lot of interest recently.

The eLMD concept is based on the multi-year experience of the LUNOVU design team in the area of industrial laser machine systems. It is designed to be a process-ready turn key system. Even without having any specific knowledge, LMD processes can be run immediately as basic processes and machine programmes for standard part geometries are already integrated into the machine.

Due to its elaborate design, the system can be offered under very attractive financial conditions. Nevertheless, even in its basic configuration it comes with a sophisticated safety concept, high performance system components and an intuitive user interface, thus offering a safe and quick entry into the world of Additive Manufacturing.

eLMD is designed in an open and extendable fashion, allowing upgrades and extensions at any time. Special attention was paid to “intelligent” extensions, providing multi material capabilities, automated recognition of parts surface topologies, automated toolpath generation or an integrated laser power control.
